Bangle & Bracelet Types, Explained
- Bangle — a rigid, closed-circle band, slid over the hand. Traditional and everyday styles both common.
- Kada — a thicker, often more ornate bangle, frequently worn in pairs for bridal and festive looks.
- Cuff — an open-ended bracelet that flexes slightly to fit, no sizing needed.
- Chain bracelet — a flexible linked bracelet, closed with a clasp. The most adjustable, everyday-friendly option.
- Stacking bangles — multiple thin bangles worn together for movement and sound, common in festive dressing.
Bangle Size Chart (Indian Sizing)
Indian bangle sizes run roughly from 2.2 to 2.10 (inches, inner diameter). To find your size:
| Method | How |
|---|---|
| Existing bangle | Measure the inner diameter of a bangle that slides on comfortably. |
| Hand measurement | Wrap a measuring tape around the widest part of your hand (across the knuckles, thumb tucked in), then match to a size chart — most sellers list one on the product page. |
| String method | Wrap string around the widest part of the hand, measure the length, and convert to diameter (length ÷ 3.14). |
Unlike rings, a bangle that's too tight genuinely won't go on — when between two sizes, size up.
How to Stack Bangles & Bracelets
Odd numbers (3, 5, 7) tend to look more considered than even ones. Mix widths — a few thin bangles with one wider kada reads more finished than a uniform row. Keep to one metal tone unless deliberately mixing.
Metal & Plating Guide
Bangles see constant contact with desks, bags, and doorframes. As with rings, gold-filled or vermeil resists wear far better than standard gold-plated pieces for anything worn daily.
Pairing by Occasion
Office & Everyday
A single slim bangle or a delicate chain bracelet — anything that won't jangle through a workday of typing.
Festive & Ethnic
A stack of bangles is the traditional choice, especially with sarees and lehengas — see the jewellery for saree guide.
Bridal
A kada set (often in pairs, one per wrist) is a bridal staple — full breakdown in the bridal jewellery guide.
Care Tips
Put bangles on and take them off carefully — pulling over the knuckle repeatedly is the fastest way to wear down plating at the point of contact. Remove before washing hands or applying lotion, and store bangles flat rather than stacked on a rod that lets them scratch each other.
