Ring Types, Explained
- Classic band — a single, simple metal band. Works alone or stacked, day to day.
- Cocktail ring — a bold, statement piece, usually with a large stone or sculptural design. One-ring-does-it-all for an outfit.
- Stacking rings — slim bands worn together, 2–4 at a time, mixed textures or finishes.
- Solitaire — a single central stone, traditionally associated with engagement rings but worn standalone too.
- Adjustable rings — an open band that flexes to fit, useful for gifting when you don't know the exact size.
Ring Sizing Guide (Indian Sizing)
Indian ring sizes typically run from size 5 to size 23, measured by inner circumference in millimetres. If you don't know your size:
| Method | How |
|---|---|
| String method | Wrap a strip of paper or string around the base of your finger, mark where it overlaps, measure in mm, and match to a size chart. |
| Existing ring | Measure the inner diameter of a ring that already fits, in mm. |
| Time of day | Fingers swell slightly in heat and by evening — measure at room temperature, mid-afternoon, for the most accurate size. |
When in doubt, size up slightly — a ring that's a touch loose is more comfortable than one that's tight, and can be adjusted with a ring guard.
How to Stack Rings
Mix widths rather than repeating the same band three times — one thicker statement band with two thinner ones reads more intentional. Keep to one metal tone across a stack unless you're deliberately mixing gold and silver as a style choice.
Metal & Plating Guide
Rings see more daily friction than most other jewellery — against desks, phone screens, dishwater. Gold-filled or vermeil holds plating far better here than standard gold-plated pieces, which can show wear at the band's high points within months of daily use.
Pairing by Occasion
Office & Everyday
A single classic band or a slim stack — nothing so large it catches on clothing or a keyboard.
Evening & Festive
This is where a cocktail ring earns its place — one bold piece is often enough, paired with simpler earrings and necklace.
Bridal
See the bridal jewellery guide for how rings pair with a full bridal set.
Care Tips
Remove rings before washing dishes, applying lotion, or exercising — soap residue and friction are the fastest way to dull plating. Store rings flat or on a ring cone rather than loose in a drawer, to avoid scratching stones against metal.
